A very important part of celebration in Indian households is Sweets. It is almost impossible to have the festive season without traditional Indian sweets. My house at this time of the year is filled with different sweets that although add up the calories, helps to celebrate with family and friends.
One of my favorites of this season is nankathai because it’s the best of both worlds. It is of cookie texture but tastes just like a traditional Indian sweet. The aroma of freshly powdered cardamom mixed with ghee makes everything better. Nankathai is a traditional shortbread cookie which is super easy to make and delicious to eat.
Let’s get started.

Ingredients:
1 cup Maida/ All purpose flour
1/2 cup Besan/ Bengal gram flour
2 1/2 tbsp sooji / Semolina
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/2 cup ghee/ clarified butter / slightly melted butter- room temperature
Pinch of salt
Pinch of cardamom powder
Pistachios and almonds to garnish
Method :
Mix together maida, Besan, sooji, powdered sugar, salt and cardamom powder in a large bowl. Pour in the ghee and form into a dough. Shape into round balls, flatten it and make a thumb print in the middle. Decorate with finely chopped up pistachios and almonds. Bake at 160C for 18 minutes.
Let them cool down and then store in an airtight container.
Enjoy them with a cup of tea or on its own . I’m sure this will be a favorite !
